Classes start March 23 + 24, 2022.

Each class will meet for one hour sessions over ten consecutive weeks.

Step 2

The Step 2 Class is ideal for children who have finished Step 1+ or have successfully competed in beginner tournaments. They should be able to apply Step 1 concepts with the skill and consistency of a player who solves 1+ tasks accurately. 

This course is the best way for students to move into the world of tactics: Double attacks, pins, discovered attacks, removing the defender, etc. Step 2 students will more deeply master the idea of winning material, attacking the opponent, and thinking ahead. Those who become sharp tacticians will be able to compete very successfully in a wide range of tournaments. In ten lessons, students will learn about:

  • Piece Activity
  • Double Attacks
  • Pins
  • Eliminating the Defender
  • Opening Principles
  • Mate in 2
  • Mating with King and Rook vs. King
  • Discovered Attack
  • Defending Against Mate
  • Intermediate Moves

Lessons will use zoom in combination with our interactive online coaching platform. Regular HW will be assigned electronically to help students solidify and apply the concepts being taught. Class is limited to 10 students, to ensure each student receives the individual attention required for them to thrive. Step 2+

The Step 2+ class is ideal for children who have finished Step 2 or have successfully competed in intermediate tournaments. They should be able to consistently apply the tactics from the Step 2 workbook in tournament games.

This course is perfect for deepening the skills that decide games between intermediate players: Giving mate, playing pawn endgames, punishing mistakes in the opening, defending, etc. Step 2+ students will learn to think ahead more precisely, considering all of their options and anticipating the opponent’s intention. Those completing the coursework successfully will have a rock solid foundation to move into higher level chess. In ten lessons, students will learn about:

  • Solving Mixed Puzzles
  • Intermediate Moves
  • Giving Checkmate
  • Pawn Endings
  • The Opening
  • Defending
  • Visualization
  • Visualizing Mate
  • Stalemate Motifs
  • Winning Material

Step 3

The Step 3 class is ideal for children who have finished Step 2+ and have successfully competed in intermediate tournaments. They should be able to consistently apply the tactics from the Step 2+ workbook in tournament games.

This course is perfect for making the transition to a more serious level of tournament chess. Students will go beyond tactics they have previously learned and begin to master other essential skills: Making plans, playing king and pawn endgames, defending against the opponent’s threats, calculating accurately, trapping pieces, and much more. Students who complete the coursework successfully, while regularly competing in tournaments and analyzing their games, should be able to face strong opposition with confidence. In ten lessons, students will learn about:

  • Completing the Opening
  • Discovered and Double Check
  • Attacking a Pinned Piece
  • Mate after Gaining Access
  • The Square of the Pawn
  • Eliminating the Defender
  • Defending against a Double Attack
  • Mini-Plans
  • Draws
  • X-Rays
